Heartburn prevention is easier and more convenient than you might think. This is a common problem and there are some simple steps that anyone can take in order to enjoy a normal life free from heartburn issues. Put very simply, heartburn prevention can be only as far as avoiding certain types of food and beverages. In some cases heartburn prevention might also require some weight loss so exercise is also recommended. Though common, heartburn should not occur regularly as it is indicative of a more serious health problem. Heartburn prevention means avoiding spicy, sugary, high fat, and acidic foods like citrus fruits. Fried foodstuffs can also cause heartburn. The basic rule is to avoid anything that causes your stomach to create more acid than is required for digestion free from heartburn. Spicy and high fat food or fried foods cause more acid production and hence increase the risk of heartburn. The same applies for citrus fruits like tomatoes. Overeating causes the stomach to get bloated and the acid in it is put under pressure. This pressure can cause the acid to leak into the esophagus, causing heartburn. Being overweight puts pressure on the stomach muscles and that is why exercise and weight loss is beneficial.

Heartburn occurs when the digestive acid in the stomach, for any reason whatsoever, finds its way into the esophagus, the tube connecting the lower throat to the stomach. The acid causes inflammation and irritation when it comes in contact with the inner walls of the esophagus. This creates the burning sensation known so well by heartburn victims. In case too much acid seeps through then there will be the sour taste in the mouth and in extreme cases, even vomiting.

Stress is another factor that causes the stomach to step up acid production. Even otherwise healthy people can suffer from heartburn if they go through a stressful period. Problems such as anxiety increase the risk of heartburn attacks. In such cases trying the treat heartburn is futile because the problem is the anxiety or depression and not heartburn itself. Heartburn can also be a symptom of some other problem with the body or mind. Stress management techniques like deep breathing, yoga, meditation, and having meals in peaceful surroundings is a good idea. Eating in front of the television is not such a good idea because people often lose track of what or how much they eat when watching television.

All stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, sodas, and tobacco also cause heartburn so they are best avoided.
