Overeating is another thing to avoid as it puts the contents of the stomach under pressure. The acid can thus squeeze into the esophagus causing heartburn.

There are several over the counter medications available to provide relief from heartburn and the most commonly used ones are antacids that reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. Always consult your doctor before taking any medication because heartburn can also be a symptom of some other, more serious, disorder.
